Statement of Purpose Campbell University School of Pharmacy is dedicated to the growth and development of our students, their achievements and educational outcomes. Our mission is to educate students in a Christian environment to be pharmacists or pharmacy-related professionals who will meet existing and future health care needs and who will provide leadership to their profession and to the organizations that represent pharmacy. It is with this mission in mind that we are initiating a program of continued assessment in our school. Program assessment is meant to assess an entire program, its students, curriculum and the processes surrounding the program. Our goal is to design a program to provide continuous improvement in academic processes through the utilization of meaningful data. These data will serve as the foundation for our assessment plan as it is developed, implemented and revised through a circular 5-Step communications process—1)Design; 2)Evaluate; 3)Disseminate; 4)Review; and 5)Act. The circular process will enable us to cultivate an ongoing culture of overall program assessment.
The focus of the assessment plan will concentrate on student achievement and student activities within the realm of curriculum. Our plan to follow the 5-Step circular process above for each educational objective—outlined in our strategic plan—is structured on a portion of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy's, Guide for Doctor of Pharmacy Program Assessment. This guide will serve as our basis for creating our own plan of pharmacy program assessment. The plan suggests we begin determining our assessment goals and purpose based primarily on, first, the improvement of student learning and student life. Therefore, we have decided to begin our initial assessment plan with outcome goals related to the Pharm.D. curriculum and later we will evolve the plan to include overall program assessment measurements and finally our masters level programs in Clinical Research and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Finally, success of the program is dependent upon all individuals within the Campbell University School of Pharmacy. Faculty, staff, students, alumni, school of pharmacy administrators, department heads, and university administrators should provide a continuous commitment to the ongoing program and process of assessment. Their understanding, utilization and involvement in the assessment program will determine its success. A standing Assessment Committee has been established to coordinate this process. A Director of Assessment and Evaluation who reports directly to the Dean will enforce the process.
The overall plan of assessment is a work in progress, beginning with curriculum, and will evolve to full implementation in Fall/Winter 2005. Routine assessment and revision of the academic program assessment plan will be continued into the future. The following pages outline our plan of assessment as it relates to the Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum.
